Exploring a former communist prison

Exploring a former communist prison

Get exclusive access into a former communist prison - full day experience by car

An experience for the curious, the bold, and the spirited wanting to explore one of the most famous communist prisons in Romania. We will start off with a quick overview of our older, much more glorious history, explaining how Bucharest developed during the past 500 years and how the city's military fortification system came into existence. We will then continue with a drive through the Bronx of Bucharest, where you'll witness the communist bedroom dormitories that defined the last 50 years of Romanian social history. To top everything up, you will get exclusive access to a former communist prison, now a memorial within Bucharest's largest prison, as we delve into the story of Fort 13 Jilava—a 19th-century military fort transformed into a communist detention and execution camp. Local Hosts turn tourists into locals, and locals into tourists. And since we know that during a tour it's best to stop for refreshments and quick bites, we've included a stop at the end of the day.

Reviews

The Communism Tour was my friend's favorite activity throughout the whole trip to Romania! It was fascinating to get a tour of Revolution Square from a person who had been there in December 1989 when Communism fell. We felt like the amount of time spent at each site in Bucharest was just right and we were particularly interested in the Jalava Fort Prison Tour. Mircea had extensive knowledge of this historical site. He knew the layout extremely well and spoke in interesting detail in each area of the prison. We had lunch at a local restaurant and then watched the changing of the guard at Romania’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This was not a tour on our original itinerary I made for our trip to Romania, but I am so glad we added it. It was such a unique experience and we learned so much throughout our day with Mircea. He is extremely knowledgeable and the tour he provided was amazing. I really appreciated his communication and help from the moment we reserved the tour. In addition, he even recommended other things to do while we were in Romania and responded to any questions I had after the tour and throughout my time there. I cannot speak highly enough about Mircea or the day we spent with him on this tour. We highly recommend you book this!
